Division (Accounting)

is a self sufficient unit within a company. A division contains all the functions necessary to operate indepently from the parent company.


Division (Agriculture)

A method of propagation by separating and planting segments capable of growing roots and shoots.


Division (Backgammon)

One of the sections in a tournament into which players are divided according to their ability and experience. For example, a tournament might have a novice division, an intermediate division, and an open division.

In the NFL, sub-groups within conferences, such as the Eastern, Northern, Southern and Western Divisions; also, a grouping of teams in college football, where Division I contains the most competitive teams and Division III the least.

Division (Gardening)

A method of propagating plants by separating each one into two or more sections and then repotting (i.e. perennials are easily propagated this way.)


Division (Import Cars)

1. A branch or department of an organization. 2. The mathematic operation to determine how many of one number is contained in another; for example, how many 10s are in 100.


Division (Logistics)

Carriers' practice of dividing revenue received from through rates where joint hauls are involved. This is usually according to agreed formulae.


Division (Parliamentary Procedure)

(vote) - A vote; the dividing of the members into two groups (the yeas and nays) in order to reach a decision. - Synonym: vote (1)


Division (Patent)

If the patent office decides that an application covers too large an area to be considered as a single patent, then the application is split into one or more divisional applications. A divisional application has the same specification as the "parent" but claims a different invention. (see continuing applications)
