Driver (Audio Technology)

"Driver" always refers to a single naked speaker (e.g. a woofer or a tweeter) rather than an ensemble of drivers, enclosure, and crossover network, which is a loudspeaker. The primary parts of a driver are (1) the cone, which moves the air, and (2) the voice coil and magnet, which moves the cone. See a cut-away drawing of a driver (8.2 kb). Sometimes "loudspeaker" is used to mean "driver."


Driver (Bobsledding)

The front person in the bobsled, who's responsible for steering. The essential job of the driver is to maintain the straightest possible line down the course by minimizing rocking and skidding in the curves.


Driver (Business Process)

The root cause of a condition or measurement that is felt downstream in a process as in cost driver and quality driver.


Driver (Car Audio)

Just another word for a speaker. (e.g., When two 4-ohm drivers are wired in parallel, then that presents a 2-ohm load to the amplifier.)


Driver (Computer Hardware)

A driver is a special program written for a specific device, such as a mouse or video card. The program contains special knowledge of the device, and helps other programs interact with it.


Driver (Computer Virus)


A program that interprets commands for transferring to and from peripheral devices and the CPU.


Driver (DVD)

A software component that enables an application to communicate with a hardware device.

Driver (Data Recovery)

A program designed to interface a particular piece of hardware to an operating system or other software.


Driver (Digital Imaging)

A form of buffer - a circuit designed to isolate a load from the driving force.


Driver (Explosives)

A small unit similar to an explosive switch in which a piston is pushed forward by a small explosive and / or propellant charge.


Driver (Finance)

In a spreadsheet, any cell that is used as an input to another cell is said to be a Driver. For example, a row for “# of units sold” would be a key driver of “total revenue”.

Driver (Photography)
