Electrolyte

For Electrolyte we have terms and definitions in 12 topics. The topics are Automotive, Batteries, Capacitors, Chemistry, Dairy Production, Electric Power, Explosives, Fitness, Import Cars, Plumbing, Robotics and Solar Energy.

Electrolyte (Automotive)

Liquid that surrounds the plates of a battery and allows a free flow of electrons.

Electrolyte (Batteries)

The medium which provides the ion transport mechanism between the positive and negative electrodes of a cell.

Electrolyte (Capacitors)

A conducting medium in which the flow of electric current takes place by migration of ions. Commonly an electrolyte is defined as a substance that when dissolved in a specific solvent, usually polar, like water or ethylene glycol, produces an ionically conducting solution.
Typical electrolytes are solutions of acids, bases, salts, and molten salts. Molten salts are a special class of electrolytes in which the ions and the solvent are the same species.
In an electrolytic capacitor the electrolyte constitutes the second electrode, or plate, separated from the anode, or positive plate by the barrier layer of oxide formed on the anode surface.
The electrolyte impregnated in the element (typically the wound anode foil, paper separator, and cathode foil of an electrolytic capacitor) is referred to as driving or working electrolyte and performs the following two functions:
1. it impregnates and adheres to the surfaces of the anode and cathode foils to realize 100 % of their capacitance (essentially a cathode action).
2. repairs defects in the anode oxide film.
Important: The characteristics of the electrolyte have a great influence on the temperature characteristic, frequency characteristic, high temperature load life, reliability, etc. of the capacitor, and so an electrolyte with a composition different from that of the formation electrolyte and one that also satisfies economic, safety and other requirements is, of course, required.
Ideally, a driving electrolyte should:
* be chemically inert to all capacitor components exposed to it
* have the ability to anodize the anode material
* have good temperature stability
* have a suitable conductivity
* be free of contaminating or corrosive agents
* additionally, if there is a spacer material separating the anode and cathode structures, then the electrolyte must also impregnate or "wet" the spacer very well without unduly decreasing its effective conductivity.

Electrolyte (Chemistry)

A substance that forms ions when dissolved in water.

Electrolyte (Dairy Production)

Substance that dissociates in solution thereby becoming electrically charged. Many minerals are present in the body as electrolytes.

Electrolyte (Electric Power)

A liquid conductor of electricity.

Electrolyte (Explosives)

An electrical conductor in which current is carried by Ions rather than free electrons (as in a metal). Electrolytes include water solutions of acids, bases or salts; certain pure liquids; and molten salts. Electrolysis.

Electrolyte (Fitness)

A charged ion capable of conducting electrical current when in solutions.

Electrolyte (Import Cars)

1. A substance in which the condition of electricity is accompanied by chemical action.2. Any substance which, in solution, is separated into ions and is made capable of conducting electric current. 3. The sulfuric acid solution of a lead-acid battery. 4. A chemical compound that conducts ions from one electrode the the other inside a fuel cell.

Electrolyte (Plumbing)

A nonmetallic substance that carries an electric current, or a substance which, when dissolved in water, separates into ions which can carry an electric current.

Electrolyte (Robotics)

A nonmetal that conducts electricity. Saltwater and acid are electrolytes.

Electrolyte (Solar Energy)

A liquid conductor of electricity. In batteries, usualy H2SO4, sulfuric acid, but may be any number of things. Seawater is the mostcommon electrolyte in the world - and by suspending a zinc and a steel sheet in it, you can get a little electricity.
