A bacterial infection, most commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus, that leads to INFLAMMATION of the heart valves. Endocarditis has been associated with INTRAVENOUS drug use. Although potentially fatal if untreated, it can be treated with ANTIBIOTICS.
