Ferrule (Artist)

The metal cylinder that surrounds and encloses the hairs on a brush. Customarily made of nickel or nickel-plated base metal.

Ferrule (Billiards)

(General) A piece of protective material (usually plastic, horn or metal) at the end of the cue shaft, onto which the cue tip is attached.


Ferrule (Construction)

Metal tubes used to keep roof gutters "open". Long nails (ferrule spikes) are driven through these tubes and hold the gutters in place along the fascia of the home.


Ferrule (Fiber Optics)

The rigid prong in a fiber-optic plug that aligns the fiber with the socket. Ferrule materials are ceramic, plastic and stainless steel.


Ferrule (Furniture)

Metal band put around a slender shaft (such as the base of a wooden chair leg) to strengthen it or prevent splitting.


Ferrule (Pipe Smoking)

A ring or band arounda pipe's shank. Commonly seen materials for pipe ferrules are acrylic, silver, horn and bone.

Metal cover piece for the lavatory overflow opening.
