Refers to half of the data contained in a picture frame, measured in lines. Two fields are necessary for one picture frame with data stored on alternating field lines.

The flat (or slightly curved) portion of a coin where there is no design.

In a computer file, a field is a set of digits read as one number. For example the digits 310599 could be divided into fields thus: 3,1,0,5,9,9 or thus: 31, 05, 99.

Usually abbreviated, frequently-used fields include: la = language; py = specific year(s); dt = specific document type such as research; jn = specific journal title; au = specific author.

A place of dense, shorter plants, including shrubs and grasses. Because hardly any trees grow in a field, plants that need a lot of sunlight are able to grow. A farmer's field has only the plants that the farmer wants to grow; a wild field, such as a meadow, has many different plants and animals.

A term commonly used to describe the stationary (Stator) member of a DC Motor. The field provides the magnetic field with which the mechanically rotating (Armature or Rotor) member interacts.

The surface area above a petroleum formation.

In interlaced-scan video, each complete frame is split into 2 sequential fields, each of which contains half the scanning lines of the frame. One field contains the odd scanning lines, and the other field the even lines.

The surface of a shield upon which the charges or bearings are blazoned; or, of each separate coat when the shield is quartered or impaled.

See more Import Cars Terms ...

A data member of a class. Unless specified otherwise, a field is not static.
See more Java Terms ...

A region of physical influence that interrelates and interconnects matter and energy. Fields are not a form of matter; rather matter is energy bound within fields.

An interlaced display is made using two fields, each one containing half of the scan lines needed to make up one frame of video. Each field is displayed in its entirety -- therefore, the odd field is displayed, then the even, then the odd, and so on. Fields only exist for interlaced scanning systems. So for (M) NTSC, which has 525 lines per frame, a field has 262.5 lines, and two fields make up a 525-line frame.

Refers to the entire group of cars on the racetrack.

The general area encompassed by one or more oil or gas reservoirs or pools that are located on a single geologic feature, that are otherwise closely related to the same geologic feature (either structural or stratigraphic). See POOL.

The geographical area encompassing a group of one or more underground petroleum pools sharing the same or related infrastructure.

Area of oil and gas production with at least one common reservoir for the entire area.

A particular area, as in a record in a database, in which the same type of information is regularly recorded. A field in an article database may contain the titles of articles, for example, while another field may contain the names of journals the articles are in. Some search engines allow a user to limit a search to one or more specific fields.

For example, EMPLOYEE-RECORD might contain fields to store Last-Name, First-Name, Address, City, State, Zip-Code, Hire-Date, Current-Salary, Title, Department, and so on. Individual fields are characterized by their maximum length and the type of data (for example, alphabetic, numeric, or financial) that can be placed in them. The facility for creating these specifications usually is contained in the data definition language (DDL). In relational database management systems, fields are called columns. 2. A space in an on-screen form where the user can enter a specific item of information.

The water polo field is 20 to 30 meters between the goal lines and 10 to 20 meters wide. There are white buoys on each side of the pool to indicate the goal lines and the half-distance line. At each end of the pool, there are colored buoys denoting the 2-meter lines (red), 4-meter lines (yellow), and 7-meter lines (green). Water depth is a minimum of 1.8 meters, but 2 meters is the preferred depth. The playing area extends a minimum of .3 meters behind the goal lines at each end of the pool. See also goal.
