Filling (Candy Making)

Frosting, preserves, and/or pudding that is spread between layers of cake to hold them together.


Filling (Carpet)

Filling (same as weft) yarns of cotton, jute, or kraftcord running across the fabric and used with the chain yarns to bind the pile tufts to the backing yarns. In a woven fabric, the yarn running from selvage to selvage at right angles to the warp. Each crosswise length is called a pick. In the weaving process the filling yarn is carried by the shuttle or other type of yarn carrier.

Filling (Environment)

Depositing dirt, mud or other materials into aquatic areas to create more dry land, usually for agricultural or commercial development purposes, often with ruinous ecological consequences.


Filling (Furniture)

Step in furniture finishing in which wood pores are filled with a fine substance (typically, powdered soil), causing the surface to be smoother, flatter, and more reflective when complete.


Filling (Hurricane)

Used in describing the history of a low-pressure system or an area of cyclonic circulation, it means an increase in the central pressure of the system. Although it usually describes the action of a pressure system on a constant pressure chart, it also means a surface low is decreasing in cyclonic circulation and losing its characteristics. The opposite of deepening.


Filling (Interior Design)

Filling (Spy)

The act of inserting material in a dead drop.
