Film (Contraception)

A paper-thin sheet of spermicide, which is placed at the back of the woman's vagina on or near the cervix to help prevent pregnancy.


Film (Corrosion)

A thin, not necessarily visible, layer of material.


Film (Graphics, Output)

Material that is loaded into an imagesetter. Film is coated with a light sensitive emulsion and exposed with laser light inside the output device. After chemical development the film holds a very sharp image of the layout created by the designer. This film is used to prepare printing plates for a press run.


Film (Photography)

The material used in a camera to record a photographic image. Generally it is a light-sensitive emulsion coated on a flexible acetate or plastic base.


Film (Plastics)

Films are flat materials that are extremely thin in comparison to its length and breadth. Typically, a film has a maximum nominal thickness of 0.25 millimeters.

Film (Professional Photography)

Photographic emulsion coated on a flexible, transparent base that records images or scenes.


Film (Scanner)

Photosensitive material, generally on a transparent base, which will receive character images, and may be chemically processed to expose those images. In imagesetting, any photosensitive material, transparent or not, may be called film.

Thin, plastic sheeting having nominal thickness usually not greater than 0.010 inch.
