Finish (Carpet)

1. A substance or mixture of substances added to textile materials to impart desired properties. 2. A process, physical or chemical, performed on textile materials to produce a desired effect. 3. A property, such as smoothness, drape, luster, water repellency, flame retardancy, or crease resistance that is produced by number 1 and/or number 2 listed above. 4. The state of a textile material as it leaves a process.

Finish (Cigar)

A tasting term. It refers to the taste that lingers on your palate after a puff. Mild cigars do not have much finish, either in terms of length or complexity. But stronger, more full-bodied cigars have distinctive flavors that linger for a while.

Finish (Coffee)

If aroma is the overture of the coffee, then finish is the resonant silence at the end of the piece. Finish is a term relatively recently brought over into coffee tasting from wine connoisseurship; it describes the aftertaste that lingers on the palate after the coffee is spit out or swallowed. It is in part a reflection of body; heavier-bodied coffees like the Sumatran will have a much longer finish than lighter-bodied coffees like the Mexican.

Finish (Leather)

A surface application on the leather to color, protect, or mask imperfections. More specifically, all processes administered to leather after it has been tanned.

Finish (Paper)

Generic term for the surface characteristics of a paper. Finishes range from rough to smooth. Additional smoothness can be obtained if paper is supercalendered. Finish is important in getting the correct reproduction of a printed image.

Finish (Pavement)

The texture of a surface after compacting and finishing operations has been performed.

Finish (Pipe Smoking)

The techniques, stains and waxes applied to the exterior surface of a pipe. Common finish terms are: smooth, rusticated, sandblasted, natural.

Finish (Roofing)

In hardware, metal fastenings on cabinets which are usually exposed such as hinges and locks.

Finish (Rowing)

The final portion of the drive, just before the oar is taken out of the water.

Finish (Soccer)

(a) to complete an offensive play with a shot on goal; (b) to place a ball on frame or to score with a little more thought, accuracy, and technique than 'merely' shooting

Finish (Swimming)

In a race the legal touch at the end of the prescribed distance. In the stroke the final propulsive phase of the arm stroke before the hand starts to recover and/or leaves the water to return for the next stroke.

Finish (Wine Tasting)

Aftertaste, or final impression the wine leaves; it can have a long finish or a short one (not desirable).
