Flame (Chat Acronyms)

To insult someone, a rude post or comment


Flame (Comics)

As in "Keeper of the * flame" where * is replaced by a comics character or series, such as "Keeper of the Suicide Squid flame". Indicates a strong liking for that particular character/series, with said character/series usually being currently in limbo. Or in other words, a not-often-seen character or series that the person wishes would get more exposure/be brought back. Originated by Dwayne MacKinnon, Keeper of the Alpha Flight Flame.

Flame (Computer Technology)

This refers to harsh or chastising e-mail or other Internet communication. Flames are sent to you when you make someone angry, usually in a chat room, Usenet newsgroup or other message board. If you don't follow proper netiquette, chances are you will get flamed.


Flame (Domain Names)

An online insult usually delivered by way of e-mail or a newsgroup posting. Flaming is considered poor "netiquette". (See also "netiquette").


Flame (Dream)

To dream of fighting flames, foretells that you will have to put forth your best efforts and energy if you are successful in amassing wealth.

Flame (Egyptian Mythology)

This symbol represent: lamp or brazier o: stand from whic: flame emerges. Fire was embodied in the sun and in its symbol the uraeus which spit fire. Fire also play: part in the Egyptian concept of the underworld. There is one terrifying aspect of the underworld which is similar to the christians concept of hell. Most egyptians would like to avoid this place with its fiery lakes and rivers that are inhabited by fire demons.


Flame (Explosives)

A chemical reaction or reaction product, partly or entirely gaseous, that yields heat and light. State of blazing combustion. A flame profile is a temperature profile of any particular flame.


Flame (Furniture)

A finial carved to resemble the flame of a torch.


Flame (Interactive Marketing)

An inflammatory opinion or criticism distributed by e-mail or posted on a newsgroup.


Flame (Internet)

Originally, "flame" meant to carry forth in a passionate manner in the spirit of honorable debate. Flames most often involved the use of flowery language and flaming well was an art form. More recently flame has come to refer to any kind of derogatory comment no matter how witless or crude.

Flame (Natural Gas)

An ordinarily visible condition resulting from the rapid oxidation of a fuel which produces self-evident heat, light, or both.


Flame (Technology)

A negative response to an email message or newsgroup posting. If you post an article or send an email to an audience that deems your message inappropriate, expect to get "flamed." The most common recipients of flames are users who post commercial messages in public forums, those who post adult material in non-adult areas of the Internet, and users who post or send racial or gender-biased comments. The worst sort of flame is known as a "mail-bomb," which occurs when the user being flamed open his or her email and receives a flood of letters with unusually long file attachments that may make their computer crash.


Flame (Telecommunications)

To write emotional remarks on electronic mail.


Flame (Video Game Programming)

A vicious email attack. The term comes from the phrase "Flame On!" uttered by the Human Torch, a member of the "Fantastic Four," when he wanted to light his fire and torch off the bad guys. In the early days of the ARPANET it was common for people to put "flame on" and "flame off" tags in their email and their mailing list postings to denote angry comments.
Some strange people have come to consider the flame and flame baiting, also known as "trolling," to be a form of performance art. It is not uncommon to get fan mail in response to a good flame.
