Flap (Aviation)

A movable, usually hinged airfoil set in the trailing edge of an aircraft wing, designed to increase lift or drag by changing the camber of the wing or used to slow an aircraft during landing by increasing lift. Also see FOWLER FLAP, SLOTTED FLAP, and SPLIT FLAP.

Flap (Breast Augmentation)

A portion of tissue, which may include muscle, fat and skin, with its blood supply moved from one part of the body to another.


Flap (Breast Cancer)

A portion of tissue with its own blood supply moved from one part of the body to another. Flaps of muscle, fat and skin are often used in reconstructive breast surgery to provide additional tissue for the reconstructed breast. Common donor sites for flap reconstruction are the abdomen (transverse rectus abdominus musculocutaneous, or TRAM Flap), back (latissimus dorsi flap) and buttocks (gluteus maximus musculocutaneous flap).


Flap (Breast Reconstruction)

A portion of tissue, which may include muscle, fat and skin, with its blood supply moved from one part of the body to another.


Flap (Entertainment Industry)

In animation, movement of the mouth. If the talking stops and the character’s mouth keeps moving, an actor will be called in to add either internally, at the beginning, or at the end of the line so that the mouth flaps match the rhythm of the speech.

Flap (Speleological)

A section of wall lining in a lava tube that has broken free and sagged or rolled down away from the wall. Where only a small patch has been pushed off by gas pressure from behind it may be referred to as a 'burst'.

Flap (Tap Dance)

A forward brush step: With the knee in a flexed position, strike the ball of the free foot against the floor in a forward motion, stepping forward on the same foot; the step takes weight. May be executed in any direction but normally forward.


Flap (Tires)


A rubber protector used in tube type truck tires to prevent injury to the tube by the bead toes and at the valve slot of the rim.
