Focal Plane (Photography)

The plane on which the image of a subject is brought to focus behind the lens. To produce a sharp picture, the lens must be focused so that this place coincides with the plane on which the film sits. Also called the film plane.


Focal Plane (Telescope)

The surface on which a lens or objective forms an image: Where you would have to put a piece of paper to catch an image in sharp focus. The term "focal plane" is often a misnomer, for the focal surface is often not flat, but curved.
