Fragmentation

For Fragmentation we have terms and definitions in 12 topics. The topics are Biodiversity, Computer Technology, DTV, Ecosystems, Explosives, Fish, Hunting, International Economics, Metal, Microbiology, Storage Media and Technology.

Fragmentation (Biodiversity)

The breaking up of large habitats into smaller, isolated chunks. Fragmentation is one of the main forms of habitat destruction, which is the primary reason biodiversity is in decline.

Fragmentation (Computer Technology)

This occurs when a hard drive writes a file in multiple segments instead of in a physically contiguous area. A higher level of fragmentation means that most files are fragmented, and many files contain lots of fragments. A low level of fragmentation implies that more files are in one piece, and that if files are fragmented, they are only in a few fragments. For example, say you have two files, file a and file b. You write them both to a hard drive. A low level of fragmentation may be represented by: aaaaabbbbb. A high level of fragmentation may be represented by: aabbababa.

Fragmentation (DTV)

Scattering of data over a hard disk caused by successive recording and deletion operations. Generally this will eventually result in slow data recall - a situation not suitable for video recording or replay.

Fragmentation (Ecosystems)

The dissecting of an ecosystem by the construction of roads, dams, and other infrastructure or by conversion whereby species habitats are split and avenues are opened for invasion by nonnative species and human settlement

Fragmentation (Explosives)

The breaking and scattering in all directions of the pieces of a projectile, bomb or grenade.
The breaking of a solid mass into pieces by blasting.

Fragmentation (Fish)

The process of reducing size and connectivity of stands that compose a forest.

Fragmentation (Hunting)

The splitting or isolating of patches of similar habitat, typically forest cover, but including other types of habitat. Habitat can be fragmented naturally or from forest management activities, such as clearcut logging.

Fragmentation (International Economics)

The splitting of production processes into separate parts that can be done in different locations, including in different countries. One of many terms for the same phenomenon, this particular one (which I seem to favor) originated with Jones and Kierzkowski (1990).

Fragmentation (Metal)

The subdivision of a grain into small discrete crystallites outlined by a heavily deformed network of intersecting slip bands as a result of cold working. These small crystals or fragments differ from one another in orientation and tend to rotate to a stable orientation detemined by the slip systems.

Fragmentation (Microbiology)

Breaking of the hyphae into pieces, each of which is capable of forming a new organism. Arthroconidia are formed in this manner.

Fragmentation (Storage Media)

Condition that occurs on a disk drive when files have been stored in noncontiguous clusters on a disk. Occurs, as files become too large to fit back into their original clusters. The effect is destraded performance caused by inefficient excessive seeks, cured via disk "optimization".

Fragmentation (Technology)

The scattering of parts of the same disk file over different areas of the disk. Fragmentation occurs as files on a disk are deleted and new files are added. Such fragmentation slows disk access and degrades the overall performance of disk operations, although usually not severely. Utility programs are available for rearranging file storage on fragmented disks.
