Franchise (Accounting)

Legal arrangement whereby the owner of a trade name, franchisor, contracts with a party that wants to use the name on a non-exclusive basis to sell goods or services, franchisee. Frequently, the franchise agreement grants strict supervisory powers to the franchisor over the franchisee which, nevertheless, is an independent business.

Franchise (Franchise)

An agreement, whether written or oral, for consideration, by which a person permits the distribution of goods or services under his trademark, service mark or tradename, during which time the grantor retains control over others or renders significant assistance to others. (This definition is substantially that of the Federal Trade Commission. See the Final Interpretive Guides, Federal Register, Vol. 44, No 166, Friday, August 24, 1979, p. 49.966 et.seg.) Franchise (Political)

A privilege granted to an individual or a corporation by a government to operate a business. The term also refers to a practice in the retail trade where a company (the franchisor) gives another company (the franchisee) the right to operate under the franchisor's name. The advantage for the franchisee is that they can have immediate name recognition for their business (particularly if the franchisor is nationally known). The franchisor gains by expanding their business with the minimum of capital.

Franchise (Real Estate)
