Free radical

For Free radical we have terms and definitions in 10 topics. The topics are Anti-Aging, Atkins Diet, Cancer, Day Spa, Food and Health, HIV and AIDs, Hormone Replacement Therapy, Medical, Prostate Cancer and Wellness.

Free Radical (Anti-Aging)

a highly chemically reactive atom, molecule or molecular fragment with a free or unpaired electron. Free radicals are produced in many different ways such as, normal metabolic processes, ultraviolet radiation from the sun, nuclear radiation and the breakdown in the body of spoiled fats. Free radicals have been implicated in aging, cancer, cardiovascular disease and other kinds of damage to the body, (see antioxidants).

Free Radical (Atkins Diet)

Free radical refers to a highly reactive molecule that can bind to and destroy the body's cellular compounds. Most free radicals in the body are toxic forms of oxygen molecules. Similar to the formation of rust, oxygen in its toxic state can damage molecules in our bodies. The body tends to produce more free radicals with age, and they are believed to play a role in the onset of degenerative diseases, as well as heart disease and cancer.

Free Radical (Cancer)

A free radical is a molecule or atom that lacks electrons and tries to steal them from other molecules, thereby damaging them. Free radicals are produced by the normal everyday metabolism in our cells. They are also found in large quantities in cigarette smoke, and are produced when ultraviolet (UV) radiation interacts with cells.

Free Radical (Day Spa)

Any molecule or atom that has at least one unpaired electron, and can exist independently.

Free Radical (Food and Health)

Highly reactive substances that result from exposure to oxygen, background radiation, and other environmental factors. These free radicals cause cellular damage in the body. The damage may be repaired by antioxidants.

Free Radical (HIV and AIDs)

A chemically active, charged atom or complex of atoms containing an excess or deficient number of electrons. Radicals seek to transfer electrons from or to other atomic complexes in order to achieve a more stable configuration. This process can damage the large molecules within cells. See OXIDATION.

Free Radical (Hormone Replacement Therapy)

Any molecule that contains an unpaired electron. Free radicals are unstable and will extract electrons from other biological molecules, which generates more free radicals.

Free Radical (Medical)

See Oxygen free radical

Free Radical (Prostate Cancer)

An atom or group of atoms that has at least one unpaired electron and is therefore unstable and highly reactive. In animal tissues, free radicals can damage cells and are believed to accelerate the progression of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and age-related diseases

Free Radical (Wellness)

An atom or group of atoms with at least one unpaired electron. Because free radicals are highly reactive, they can alter the chemical structure of cells and may accelerate the progression of cancer and cardiovascular disease.
