Gain (Accounting Terms)

Gain (Camcorder)

For audio, the measurement of the amplification for audio signals; for video, measurement of the electronic amplification of the video signal, resulting in an increase of overall luminance.

Gain (Car Audio)

The difference in the amplitude of two signals. This is commonly used to compare the input and output of an electronic component. (e.g., RichardÂ’s tweeters were not loud enough, so he turned up the gain on his high-frequency crossover output.)

Gain (Cinematography)

The ratio of the signal level at the output of an audio device to the signal level at its input. Expressed in decibels (db).

Gain (Film Production)

The ratio of the signal level at the output of an audio device to the signal level at its input. Expressed in decibels (db).

Gain (Finance)

A profit on a securities transaction recognized by selling a security for more than the security originally cost. The gain is the difference between the cost and the sale.

Gain (Remote Control Helicopter)

Usually a term associated with gyros, it describes the sensitivity of the gyro. Too much gain causes the tail to wag back and forth, while too little gain won't hold the tail steady.

Gain (Television)

(1) In a receiving antenna, the greater sensitivity to signals (coming from the favored direction if any) compared with a standard which is another antenna with certain characteristics. (2) in a movie screen, the greater amount of light reflected in desired directions (i.e. towards the viewing area) compared with a screen consisting of a surface painted with a certain standard flat white paint. Screen gain is achieved by reducing light reflected in non-favored directions such as upwards or downwards. (3) in an amplifier or amplifier stage, the amount of amplification.

Gain (Video)

The level of amplification of a signal.
