Hearing (Advocacy)

A meeting in which evidence to support particular points of view can be presented to a committee. Usually in conjunction with the consideration of a specific bill and can include experts on a specific topic, or members of the public who would be affected by the bill or issue at hand.

Hearing (Criminal Justice)

A legal proceeding in which arguments and witnesses are heard by a judicial officer or body. Trials are a particular form of hearing. There are also pre-trial hearings (for instance, when a court decides whether or not a confession was given "voluntarily") and post-trial hearings (for instance, the sentencing hearing). All states have hearings, although the precise subject matter and timing of hearings vary from state to state.


Hearing (Deafness)

Series of events in which sound waves in the air are converted to electrical signals, which are sent as nerve impulses to the brain, where they are interpreted.

Hearing (Legislative Assembly)

A public meeting of a legislative committee held for the purpose of taking testimony concerning proposed legislation.


Hearing (Natural Gas)

A formal meeting of interested parties in a rate proceeding before an administrative law judge or regulatory commission to obtain a decision on differences in a filing. Hearing may include written testimony, cross-examination of company witnesses, rebuttal testimony, recross-examination of these witnesses by the company, initial briefs, reply briefs addressing arguments raised by other in the initial briefs, and oral arguments.


Hearing (Otolaryngology)

Series of events in which sound waves in the air are converted to electrical signals that are sent as nerve impulses to the brain where they are interpreted.


Hearing (Personal Injury Law)

A proceeding usually without a jury.


Hearing (Public Speaking)

The vibration of sound waves on the eardrums and the firing of electrochemical impulses in the brain.


Hearing (Shipping)

A hearing which is held at the request of an interested party in antidumping proceedings for the purpose of allowing interested persons to express their views orally to officials of the Commerce Department. The hearing is held prior to the Commerce Department's (International Trade Administration) final determination or before the final results of an administrative review are published. Hearing (Teacher Evaluation)

An opportunity for a teacher facing dismissal to appeal the decision by presenting arguments, proofs, evidence, and testimony by others. The process includes several steps such as discovery, direct examination, cross and re-direct examinations, closing arguments, deliberation, and the issuance of a written ruling. Hearing (Workers Compensation)

California Labor Code anti-fraud clause that states, "Any person who makes or causes to be made any knowingly false or fraudulent material statement or material representation for the purpose of obtaining or denying workers' compensation benefits or payments is guilty of a felony." One thing we must all keep in mind is that there is a difference between fraud and abuse within the workers' compensation system.
