Central portion of a tree, which is stronger and more decay-resistant than the surrounding sapwood.

The hard nonliving wood at the core of a tree trunk, usually dark in color and impervious to air and water

Heartwood (Wood)

The wood extending from the true centre to the sapwood, and whose cells no longer participate in the life processes of the tree. Hearfwood may contain gums, resins, and other materials that usually make it darker and more decay resistant than sapwood.

The wood extending from the pith of the sapwood, the cells of which no longer participate in the life processes of the tree. It is usually darker than sapwood.


Heartwood (Woodworking)

The dead inner core of a tree. Usually much harder and darker than the newer wood. Also see sapwood.
