Heavy Oil (Energy)

The fuel oils remaining after the lighter oils have been distilled off during the refining process. Except for start-up and flame stabilization, virtually all petroleum used in steam plants is heavy oil. Includes fuel oil numbers 4, 5, and 6; crude; and topped crude.

Heavy Oil (Oil)

Oil having an API gravity less than 22.3ยบ. Includes some oil that will flow, however slowly, but most heavy oil requires heat or dilution to flow to a well or through a pipeline.

Tar or very viscous oil that cannot be pumped from the ground like crude oil.
