Hole (Chess)

A square that cannot be defended by a Pawn. Such a square makes an excellent home for a piece because the piece cannot be chased away by hostile Pawns. Also known as outpost.

Hole (Electric Power)

The vacancy where an electron would normally exist in a solid; behaves like a positively charged particle.


Hole (Freestyle Skiing)

A deep, depressed area created where most of the skiers land after an air bump.


Hole (Golf)

A round receptacle in the green, 4 ½" in diameter and at least 4 inches deep, usually lined with a metal cup. Also, one of the nine or eighteen areas that contains a hole, as in, "The ninth hole is a 410-yard par 3."

Hole (Natural Gas)

A common term which usually refers to the well bore. Mouse Hole and Rat Hole are shallow bores under the derrick in which the kelly joint and joints of drill pipe are temporarily suspended while making a connection. Rat Hole also refers to a hole of reduced size in the bottom of the regular well bore. Sometimes the driller "rat holes ahead" to facilitate the taking of a drill stem test when it appears that such tests will be desirable.
