Host (Computer Technology)

Computer offering other users (after login) access to its discs and memory. Also called Server.This is a generic term used to describe a computer or program that makes a resource available, usually over a network. For example a webhost, that is a "host" for webpages, so we all can see those pages.


Host (Computer Virus)


1. In a network environment, a computer that provides data and services to other computers. Services may include peripheral devices, such as printers, data storage, email, or World Wide Web access. 2. In a remote control environment, a computer to which remote users connect to access or exchange data.


Host (Dairy Production)

An organism that harbors and provides nourishment to a parasite.


Host (Domain Names)

In early ARPANET terminology, a computer that allows users to communicate with other host computers in a network. Individual users communicate by using programs such as e-mail, Telnet and FTP. More recently, this machine is called either a server or a client.


Host (E-Learning)

(noun) A computer connected to a network. (verb) To store and manage another company's technology and/or content on your own servers.


Host (Ecology)

One of the organisms in a parasitic relationship. A parasite grows on or inside the host. The host is not helped by the parasite, and is usually harmed. For example, Common Milkweed is a host plant of the Monarch butterfly. Monarch caterpillars eat milkweed as they grow.

Host (Entomological)

The organism in or on which a parasite lives; the plant on which an insect or other arthropod feeds.


Host (Environment)

1. In genetics, the organism, typically a bacterium, into which a gene from another organism is transplanted. 2. In medicine, an animal infected or parasitized by another organism.


Host (Gardening)

Any plant material that will support a parasite. Oak trees will host mistletoe that will create damage and oaks can also host Spanish moss that does no harm.


Host (HIV and AIDs)

An organism that supports the growth of a parasite or infectious organism.

A computer system that is connected to a network and communicates with other systems. Hosts are usually assigned unique addresses or names to distinguish one host from another.


Host (Networking)

Any computer on a network that is a repository for services available to other computers on the network. It is quite common to have one host machine provide several services, such as WWW and USENET.


Host (Nutrition)

An organism in or on which another organism lives and from which the invading organism obtains nourishment.


Host (Pests)

An organism (animal or plant) fed upon by a parasite or parasitoid. When insects or nematodes feed upon plants they are considered parasites of those plants, and the plants are then referred to as host plants.
