Hydrocarbon

For Hydrocarbon we have terms and definitions in 12 topics. The topics are Air Quality, Boiler, Chemistry, Day Spa, Energy, Explosives, Gasoline, Global Warming, Natural Gas, Physical Geography, Sanitation and Science.

Hydrocarbon (Air Quality)

Any of a vast number of compounds containing carbon and hydrogen in various combinations; found especially in fossil fuels. Some of the hydrocarbon compounds are major air pollutants; they may be active participants in the photochemical process or affect health

Hydrocarbon (Boiler)

A chemical compound of hydrogen and carbon.

Hydrocarbon (Chemistry)

An organic compound containing only carbon and hydrogen.

Hydrocarbon (Day Spa)

Compound composed of hydrogen and carbon.

Hydrocarbon (Energy)

An organic chemical compound of hydrogen and carbon in the gaseous, liquid, or solid phase. The molecular structure of hydrocarbon compounds varies from the simplest (methane, a constituent of natural gas) to the very heavy and very complex.

Hydrocarbon (Explosives)

A hydrocarbon is any organic compound composed solely of Carbon and Hydrogen. Hydrocarbons include aliphatic compounds, in which the carbon atoms form a chain, and Aromatic Compounds, in which the carbon atoms form stable rings. The aliphatic group is divided into alkanes (e.g., Methane and Propane), alkenes, and alkynes (e.g., Acetylene), depending on whether the molecules of the compounds contain, respectively, only single bonds, one or more carbon-carbon double bonds, or one or more carbon-carbon triple bonds. Petroleum distillation yields useful fractions that are hydrocarbon mixtures, e.g. Natural Gas, Gasoline, Kerosene, home heating oil, lubricating oils, Paraffin, and asphalt. Coal Tar is also a source of hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbon derivatives contain additional elements, e.g., oxygen, and include Alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, and halocarbons.

Hydrocarbon (Gasoline)

Any compound or mix of compounds, solid, liquid or gas, comprised of carbon and hydrogen (e.g., coal, crude oil, and natural gas).

Hydrocarbon (Global Warming)

An organic chemical compound of hydrogen and carbon in either gaseous, liquid, or solid phase. The molecular structure of hydrocarbon compounds varies from the simple (e.g., methane, a constituent of natural gas) to the very heavy and very complex.

Hydrocarbon (Natural Gas)

A chemical compound composed solely of carbon and hydrogen. The compounds having a small number of carbon and hydrogen atoms in their molecules are usually gaseous; those with a larger number of atoms are liquid, and the compounds with the largest number of atoms are solid.

Hydrocarbon (Physical Geography)

Organic compound composed primarily of hydrogen and carbon atoms. An example of a hydrocarbon is methane (CH4).

Hydrocarbon (Sanitation)

Any of the class of compounds consisting solely of carbon and hydrogen. Usually derived from petroleum.

Hydrocarbon (Science)

A compound made only of atoms of hydrogen and carbon
