A steel beam often used for floor support. Cross section of beam resembles a capital I.


I-beam (Construction)

A steel beam with a cross section resembling the letter I. It is used for long spans as basement beams or over wide wall openings, such as a double garage door, when wall and roof loads bear down on the opening.


I-beam (Offroading)

(noun) on Ford trucks, the suspension component that connects the spindle to the chassis.


I-beam (Technology)

A mouse cursor used by many applications, such as word processors, when in text-editing mode. The I-beam cursor indicates sections of the document where text can be inserted, deleted, changed, or moved. The cursor is named for its I shape. Also called I-beam pointer.
