A function of a control whereby data points are generated
between given coordinate positions.

Interpolation is a mathematical way of regenerating missing or needed information. For example, an image needs to be scaled up by a factor of two, from 100 pixels to 200 pixels. The missing pixels are generated by interpolating between the two pixels that are on either side of the pixel that needs to be generated. After all of the 'missing' pixels have been interpolated, 200 pixels exist where only 100 existed before, and the image is twice as big as it used to be.

A technique for increasing the size of a graphic file by creating pixels. Also an extrapolation algorithm. There are two types, sequential and bi-cubic.

In digital video, the creation of new pixels in the image by some method of mathematically manipulating the values of neighboring pixels. Interpolation involves using existing sampled data points to predict values between these points. The simplest form of interpolation is to connect these data points with straight lines ( a two-tap linear interpolation filter). It is used in digital video system for picture size changes and other manipulations including standards conversion.

Method for producing measuring increments which are smaller than a

Interpolation is a mathematical way of generating additional information. Let's say that an image needs to be scaled up by a factor of two, from 100 samples to 200 samples. The "missing" samples are generated by calculating (interpolating) new samples between two existing samples. After all of the "missing" samples have been generated -- presto! -- 200 samples exist where only 100 existed before, and the image is twice as big as it used to be.

The computing between two cusps for exactitude, or between two sets of tables, or a planets position between two different times. It is the mathematical process for finding an exact value of between two given points.

A method off calculating intermediate values.

It is the process of determining from two or more values what the "in-between" values should be. Interpolation is used with animation and with textures, particularly texture filtering.

A method of changing the size, resolution, or colors in an image by calculating the pixels used to represent the new image from the old ones. It is also being used to increase bit-depth claims on scanners (as in "Enhanced Bit Depth" or "Enhanced Color").

A function found on low cost scanners where optical resolution (expressed as PPI) is enhanced through software enhancement. In this way, a 300 PPI scanner can create 600 PPI files. Interpolation does not give as good a result as a scanner with higher optical resolution. (The software won't be able to enhance detail the scanner doesn't see in the first place.)

Guessing what goes in between. A typical example in video is converting the video to have a different number of scan lines or pixels. If we imagine both a grid of the source pixels and a grid of the target pixels on the screen at the same time, a target pixel may be centered between two (or among four) source pixels. Sophisticated interpolation is not just taking the average of the nearest source pixels' content but may also vary from pixel to pixel and even be influenced by the content of pixels several removed from each target pixel.
