Isolation

For Isolation we have terms and definitions in 8 topics. The topics are Bodybuilding Lingo, Car Audio, Evolution, Fish, Fitness, Microbiology, UPS and Vibration.

Isolation (Bodybuilding Lingo)

A technique that focuses work on an individual muscle without secondary or assisting muscle groups being involved, which provides maximal muscle shape. A good example is the seated dumbbell concentration curl.

Isolation (Car Audio)

A term that describes the impedance between the power supply and the signal path of component. It is an indication of power supply noise immunity. (e.g., I know that my equalizer has poor isolation because I never experienced any alternator whine until I installed my EQ.)

Isolation (Evolution)

Synonym for reproductive isolation.

Isolation (Fish)

Absence of genetic crossing among populations because of distance or geographic barriers.

Isolation (Fitness)

Normally defined as a single joint motion. It is important to remember that one cannot isolate a muscle while resistance training. For example, immediately following a load application, the stabilizer muscles become partially involved, due to the machine's assistance. The outside assistance (machine) helps the body or specific joint(s) to remain stable while the prime movers cope with the load. Although we cannot isolate muscles, we can use certain machines to isolate a joint(s), which will emphasize a target area.

Isolation (Microbiology)

As applied to patients, isolation represents separation, for the period of communicability, of infected persons or animals from others in such places and under such conditions as to prevent or limit the direct or indirect transmission of the infectious agent from those infected to those who are susceptible to infection or who may spread the agent to others. In contrast, quarantine (q.v.) applies to restrictions on the healthy contact of an infectious case.

Isolation (UPS)

The separation (often through the use of an isolation transformer) of one section of a system from undesired electrical influences of other sections.

Isolation (Vibration)

Isolation is a reduction in the capacity of a system to respond to an excitation. This is attained by the use of a resilient element between the equipment and mounting surface.
