League Of Nations (Global History)

International organization founded in 1919 to promote world peace and cooperation but greatly weakened by the refusal of the United States to join. It proved ineffectual in stopping aggression by Italy, Japan, and Germany in the 1930s, and it was superseded by the United Nations in 1945. (p. 763)


League Of Nations (Middle East)

Established at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. Like its successor, the United Nations, its purpose was the promotion of international peace and security. It was officially dissolved in 1946.


League Of Nations (Soviet Union)

An organization for international cooperation, established by the victorious Allied Powers at the end of World War I. The Soviet Union joined in 1934 but was expelled in 1939.


League Of Nations (World Politics)

The first, true general international organization. It existed between the end of World War I and the beginning of World War II and was the immediate predecessor of the United Nations.


League Of Nations (World War II)

Was formed after World War I to be an international peace keeping alliance. While the United States monitored its activities closely, it never became a member because it did not sign the Treaty of Versailles which ended World War I.
