License (Canadian Law)

A special permission to do something on, or with, somebody else's property which, were it not for the license, could be legally prevented or give rise to legal action in tort or trespass. A common example is allowing a person to walk across your lawn which, if it were not for the license, would constitute trespass. Licenses are revocable at will (unless supported by a contract) and, as such, differs from an easement (the latter conveying a legal interest in the land). Licenses which are not based on a contract and which are fully revocable are called "simple" or "bare" licenses. A common example is the shopping mall to which access by the public is on the basis of an implied license.

License (Dream)

To dream of a license, is an omen of disputes and loss. Married women will exasperate your cheerfulness. For a woman to see a marriage license, foretells that she will soon enter unpleasant bonds, which will humiliate her pride.

As a noun, it means a legal permit; as a verb, it is to authorize by legal permit.

License (Intellectual Property)

Intellectual property rights can be bought, sold, and transferred by granting a license. A license gives a person (the licensee) the right to do something that he or she would otherwise not be permitted to do. In the context of intellectual property, licensing agreements can be used to grant limited and specified rights to use intellectual property.

License (Patent)

A transfer of patent rights that does not amount to an assignment. A license, which can be exclusive or non-exclusive, does not give the licensee the legal title to the patent.

License (Real Estate Appraisal)

License (Teacher Evaluation)

The approval by a governmental agency, usually at the state level, for an individual to be a teacher in the designated state, grade levels, subject areas, and specialties. Licensure indicates that the candidate has met a minimum level of requirements, designed to ensure the protection of student, public health, safety, and welfare interests. See Certification, Credentialing.

License (Trademark)

An agreement between a trademark owner and one or more other parties that allows the other parties to make limited, specified use of the trademark in question. Licensing of trademarks can result in the loss of the trademark unless the license arrangement provides for a certain degree of control over the licensed use.
