Ligand

For Ligand we have terms and definitions in 6 topics. The topics are Bioinformatics, Corrosion, HIV and AIDs, Prostate Cancer, Psychoactives and Science.

Ligand (Bioinformatics)

Any small molecule that binds to a protein or receptor; the cognate partner of many cellular proteins, enzymes, and receptors.

Ligand (Corrosion)

The molecule, ion, or group bound to the central atom in a chelate or a coordination compound

Ligand (HIV and AIDs)

A molecule that binds to another molecule, used especially to refer to a small molecule that binds specifically to a larger molecule, e.g., an antigen binding to an antibody or a hormone binding to a receptor. In the case of drug design, a ligand is a candidate drug molecule.

Ligand (Prostate Cancer)

An ion, a molecule, a molecular group, a substance or messenger that binds to another chemical entity at a receptor to form a larger complex which is then activated

Ligand (Psychoactives)

1. A chemical which binds somewhere; e.g., a "sigma ligand" is a drug which binds to sigma receptors somewhere. Ligands can be agonists or antagonists (or neither).

Ligand (Science)

An ion or molecule that is bound (held in close contact) by another, typically much larger, molecule.
