Line Art

For Line Art we have terms and definitions in 6 topics. The topics are Graphic Design, Illustration, Newspaper Design, Publishing, Scanner and Technical Illustration.

Line Art (Graphic Design)

black-and-white artwork with no gray areas. Pen-and-ink drawings are line art, and most graphic images produced with desktop publishing graphics programs can be treated as line art. For printing purposes, positive halftones can be handled as line art.

Line Art (Illustration)

Artwork created with solid black lines free from wash or diluted tones. It employs a process of selection, an immediacy that allows you to instantly record and interpret what you see or imagine. In line art, every mark you make reflects the progression of your drawing and often adds to its interest and vitality. Drawing is used as a vital source of communication.

Line Art (Newspaper Design)

An image comprised of solid black and white - no gray tones, as opposed to a grayscale image.

Line Art (Publishing)

Art that contains no graded tones. Usually black on white (as in comic manga) or solid color on white. In either case there are no middle tones.

Line Art (Scanner)

Images containing only black and white pixels. Also known as bilevel images. The term line art is sometimes used to describe drawings containing flat colors without tonal variation, that is, a single-bit image type that lacks any dithering effect.
