Mac (Mycobacterium Avium Complex) (HIV and AIDs)

Caused by one of a variety of organisms called mycobacteria (which are different from bacteria), this is an infection that is difficult to treat. However, more effective treatments have become available in the last few years. A combination of drugs, including several used to treat TB, is employed. Symptoms include weight loss, low-grade fevers that have a predictable daily pattern, night sweats, and general malaise. MAC is uncommon in people with CD4 counts above 50. The risk of MAC is great enough that doctors routinely prescribe medication to prevent it in people with low CD4 counts.
