Magma

For Magma we have terms and definitions in 11 topics. The topics are Earth Science, Earthquake, Energy, Geologic, Natural Hazards, Nature, Oceanography, Physical Geography, Planetary Science, Science and Volcano.

Magma (Earth Science)

Molten rock beneath the surface of the earth.

Magma (Earthquake)

Magma is liquid rock beneath the Earth’s surface. When it erupts it is called lava.

Magma (Energy)

The molten rock and elements that lie below the earthós crust. The heat energy can approach 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit and is generated directly from a shallow molten magma resource and stored in adjacent rock structures. To extract energy from magma resources requires drilling near or directly into a magma chamber and circulating water down the well in a convection- type system. California has two areas that may be magma resource sites: the Mono- Long Valley Caldera and Coso Hot Springs Known Geothermal Resource Areas.

Magma (Geologic)

Molten rock. Magma may be completely liquid or a mixture of liquid rock, dissolved gases and crystals. Molten rock that flows out onto the Earth’s surface is called lava.

Magma (Natural Hazards)

Fluid or semi-fluid material under the Earth’s surface from which lava and other rock is formed by cooling.

Magma (Nature)

Molten rock beneath the Earth's surface

Magma (Oceanography)

Molton rock formed below the surface of the Earth. If magma escapes through volcanoes or gaps in the Earth's crust it becomes lava.

Magma (Physical Geography)

Molten rock originating from the Earth's interior.

Magma (Planetary Science)

Term applied to molten rock in the interior of a planet or moon. When it reaches the surface, magma is called lava.

Magma (Science)

Molten rock occurring at depth within the Earth.

Magma (Volcano)

Molten rock containing liquids, crystals, and dissolved gases that forms within the upper part of the Earth's mantle and crust. When erupted onto the Earth's surface, it is called lava. (Teacher's Packet)
Molten rock that contains dissolved gas and minerals. When magma reaches the surface it is called lava. (Gardner, et.al., 1995)
