A move used to surmount a ledge or feature in the rock in the absence of any useful holds directly above. It involves pushing down on a ledge or feature instead of pulling down. In ice climbing, a mantle is done by moving the hands from the shaft to the top of the ice tool and pushing down on the head of the tool and the external covering of a climbing rope. Climbing ropes use Kernmantle construction consisting of a kern (or core) for strength and an external sheath called the mantle.

A rock layer, about 2,894 kilometers thick, between the Earth's crust and core. Like the crust, the upper part of the mantle is relatively brittle. Together, the upper brittle part of the mantle and the crust form tectonic plates.

The zone of the earth below the crust and above the core.

The layer of the Earth below the crust and above the core. The uppermost part of the mantle is rigid and, along with the crust, forms the 'plates' of plate tectonics. The mantle is made up of dense, iron and magnesium rich (ultramafic) rock such as dunite and peridotite.

The mantle is an area of the Earth sitting beneath the crust and above the core. It extends nearly 2900m below the surface of the Earth and can reach temperatures of 5000 °C.

Layer of the Earth's interior composed of mostly solid rock that extends from the base of crust to a depth of about 2,900 kilometers.

A mostly solid layer of Earth lying beneath the crust and above the core; consisting mostly of iron, magnesium, silicon, and oxygen. On other planets and moons, the mantle is the layer between the crust and core. Mantles contain information about a planet's total composition, a key parameter in understanding planet formation and how the planets vary in composition with distance from the Sun. A second definition of mantle is a smooth blanket of surface material (generally fine-grained, sometimes layered) that was deposited by some process such as wind or water and that now obscures the underlying land.

The largest part of the Earth's interior, below the crust and above the core, probably composed of ultramafic rocks.

The last name of the great Mickey Mantle. As a kid from Oklahoma, Mantle played the game as well as anyone. He was a hero to millions in a time when Americans needed one. Baseball has had many great players, but only a handful of them were bigger than baseball, and the Mick was one of them. Mantles first Topps card is the king of post-war issues and sells for well over $100,000 in Gem Mint condition.

A zone in the Earth's interior between the crust and the core that is 2,900 kilometers (1,740 miles) thick. (The lithosphere is composed of the topmost 65-70 kilometers (39-42 miles) of mantle and the crust). (Teacher's Packet)
