Middleware

For Middleware we have terms and definitions in 9 topics. The topics are Artificial Intelligence, Business Intelligence, Cellular, Computer Technology, Computer Virus, Gaming, Help Desk, Networking and Technology.

Middleware (Artificial Intelligence)

Also called "enabling technology." It means that the component is not intended to exist alone. The DCE is middleware.

Middleware (Business Intelligence)

A communications layer that allows applications to interact across hardware and network environments.

Middleware (Cellular)

The "mix-and-match" communications software that acts as a universal translator between diverse radio frequency technologies and protocols. Middleware resides on a remote client and a communications server, located between the client and the applications server. The software eases computing and communicating with corporate information and encourages applications development, making wireless data more attractive to corporate customers.

Middleware (Computer Technology)

Software that is used to tie an application to a network, thus the "middle" terminology. Often, the middleware is a type of network authentication or directory of network resources.

Middleware (Computer Virus)

An application connecting two otherwise separate applications.

Middleware (Gaming)

This is a term given to software companies who sell or license their game engines to other companies.

Middleware (Help Desk)

Software applications allows your call center and help desk collect information through switches from a variety of manufacturers. These applications typically run on a server and bridge applications between different types of devices and data sources.

Middleware (Networking)

This is software that provides a way for two systems to exchange information or connect with one another even though they have different interfaces. For example, you can use middleware to have a VDSL based router communicate with a set-top box.

Middleware (Technology)

1. Software that sits between two or more types of software and translates information between them. Middleware can cover a broad spectrum of software and generally sits between an application and an operating system, a network operating system, or a database management system. Examples of middleware include CORBA and other object broker programs and network control programs. See also CORBA. 2. Software that provides a common application programming interface (API). Applications written using that API will run in the same computer systems as the middleware. An example of this type of middleware is ODBC, which has a common API for many types of databases. See also application programming interface, ODBC. 3. Software development tools that enable users to create simple programs by selecting existing services and linking them with a scripting language. See also scripting language.
