Mode (Audio Technology)

Characterized by having a specific pattern (e.g. of sound pressure). Some sound features, like wavelength, can have any value. With modes there is no halfway; there are modes 1,2,3, etc., but no mode 1-1/2. Also see the discussion of resonant modes in a room.


Mode (Computer Virus)


A system state in which a single action or a series of actions are performed. A mode has an On condition and an Off condition.


Mode (Education, Gifted Education)

The most frequent score.


Mode (Explosives)

The most frequent value in a series of measurements.


Mode (Fiber Optics)

A reflective path that the light takes in a fiber. Each mode has its own pattern of electromagnetic fields as it propagates through the fiber. There is only one mode in singlemode fiber. In multimode fiber, multiple modes are generated, causing pulse dispersion at the receiving end. See dispersion.

Mode (Insurance Compensation)

In a set of observations the worth that is most prevalent.


Mode (Marketing)

The most frequently occurring measurement. The peak of a frequency curve.


Mode (Non-Profit Accountability)

The most frequent answer or test score. This is determined through a simple count. See also:Mean, Median, Standard Deviation


Mode (Photography)

Type of exposure method used by a camera, e.g., Manual mode (M), Aperture Priority mode (A), picture mode, flash mode, etc.


Mode (Physical Geography)

Statistical measure of central tendency in a set of data. The mode is the most frequently occurring value in a data set. Data sets can contain two or more mode values that occur with the same frequency.


Mode (Public Speaking)

The number that occurs most frequently in a group of numbers.


Mode (Real Estate)

The most frequently occurring variate. (See variate)


Mode (Sociology)

The value that appears most often in a given set of data. This can sometimes be a helpful way of portraying central tendency (see also MEDIAN, and MEAN).


Mode (Statistics)

Most frequent measure in a distribution; the high point on a frequency distribution.


Mode (Supply Chain)

See Transportation Mode.
Modal Split: The relative use that companies make of transportation modes; the statistics include ton-miles, passenger-miles, and revenue.
Motor Carrier: An enterprise that offers service via motor carriage.
Movement of Goods: The transfer of goods from one location to another.


Mode (Technology)

The operational state of a computer or a program. For example, edit mode is the state in which a program accepts changes to a file. See also address mode, compatibility mode, safe mode, video mode, virtual real mode.


Mode (Transportation)

A way people or goods get from one place to another, such as using cars and trucks, freight and passenger trains, walking, bicycling, and riding buses.
