Oncogenes (Breast Cancer)

A gene in a virus with the ability to cause a cell to become malignant and induce tumor formation. Oncogenes have been identified in human tumors and can be activated by carcinogens and can cause cells to proliferate. Onco is derived from the Latin root meaning "tumor". Anti-oncogenes suppress tumors.

Genes that normally play a role in the growth of cells but, when overexpressed or mutated, can foster the growth of cancer.

Genes involved in cell cycle control (growth factors, growth factor regulator genes, etc), a mutation can lead to tumor growth.
