Organelle (Evolution)

Any of a number of distinct small structures found in the cytoplasm (and therefore outside the nucleus) of eukaryotic cells (e.g., mitochondrion and chloroplast).


Organelle (Genetics and Genealogy)

A small specialized part of a cell that performs some function for the cell that is analogous to an organ in our body. See Mitochondria and Nucleus.

A specialized "organ" of a cell, such as the mitochondria, the Golgi complex, the endoplastic reticulum, the lyso-somes, and the centrioles.


Organelle (Huntingtons Disease)

A membrane-bound compartment in a cell with a specialized function.

A membrane-enclosed body specialized for carrying out certain functions; found only in eukaryotic cells.

Literally, a little organ. In the cell, various kinds of biochemical "machinery' that carry out different specialized cell functions. Mitochondria, lysosomes, vesicles, Golgi, nucleus, and nucleolus are organelles.
