Parasite (Biotechnology)

A plant or animal that lives and feeds on or within another living organism. Some examples of external parasites are ticks, fleas, and lice; some internal parasites are tapeworms (live in the intestines) and heartworms (live in the heart).

Parasite (Cancer)

An animal or a plant that lives on or in an organism of another species and gets nutrients from it. A complete parasite gets all of its nutrients from the host organism, but a semi-parasite gets only some of its nutrients from the host.

Parasite (Canine)

An organism that grows, feeds, and is sheltered on or in a different organism while contributing nothing to the survival of its host.

See more Canine Terms ...

Parasite (Dairy Production)

An organism that grows, feeds, and is sheltered on or in a different organism (the host) while contributing nothing to the survival of its host.

Parasite (Ecology)

An organism which lives off another oganism (called a host). A parasite usually grows on or inside its host. It also often, but not always, feeds on it. A parasite does not help its host in any way.

See more Ecology Terms ...

Parasite (Entomological)

An organism that spends all or part of its life in close association with another species, taking food from it but giving nothing in return. Ectoparasites live on the outside of their hosts, while endoparasites live inside the host's body.

Parasite (Evolution)

An organism that lives on or in a plant or animal of a different species, taking nutrients without providing any benefit to the host.

Parasite (Food Irradiation)

An organism that lives on or in another organism which is called the "host." It does not help the host.

Parasite (Food Safety)

An organism that lives on or in another organism which is called the "host." It does not help the host.

Parasite (HIV and AIDs)

A plant or animal that lives and feeds on or within another living organism (a host), causing some degree of harm to the host.

Parasite (Hamster)

An organism that grows, feeds, and is sheltered on or in a different organism while contributing nothing to the survival of its host (fleas, mites, ticks, and various worms are examples).

Parasite (Health)

Organism that lives in or on another organism (host) strictly for its own survival

Parasite (Hepatitis C)

Any organism which in its natural habitat feeds and lives on or in a different organism.

Parasite (Horse Health)

Any organism that is dependent in some manner for its continued existence on another organism (its host), most often to the detriment of the host.

Parasite (Humans)

An organism that survives by exploiting, and depending upon, another organism.

See more Humans Terms ...

Parasite (Huntingtons Disease)

Something that lives in, with, or on another organism and obtains benefits from the host, which it usually injures.

Parasite (Insect)

An organism that spends all or part of its life in close association with another species, taking food from it but giving nothing in return. Ectoparasites live on the outside of their hosts, while endoparasites live inside the host's body.

Parasite (Lichens)

A plant, fungus, or microbe that actively extracts nutrients or water from live host plant tissues, typically by means of intrusive organs or by living internally. (Of course animals may be parasitized or parasites too.)

See more Lichens Terms ...

Parasite (Medical)

An organisms that lives on or in other organisms, from which it obtains nutrients

Parasite (Microbiology)

An organism that lives on or in a living animal or plant host and derives nourishment from it. (Contrast with saprophyte.)

Parasite (Mold)

An organism living on or in another living organism, and obtaining nutrients from its host.

See more Mold Terms ...

Parasite (Nutrition)

Any animal or plant that lives inside or on the body of another animal or plant and obtains nourishment from it.

Parasite (Pests)

An organism that lives within or on the body of its host without killing the host, but usually debilitating the host to some extent. Cat fleas are examples of parasites; note that they feed as parasites of dogs and cats during their adult phase, while in the larval stages they are not parasitic (and are not on pets). Lice, on the other hand, are parasites from the time they hatch from eggs throughout their lives. See parasitoid.

Parasite (Physical Geography)

Consumer organism that feeds on a host for an extended period of time. Feeding causes the host to be less fit and may eventually cause premature death.

Parasite (Science)

An organism that lives within, upon, or at the expense of another organism, known as the host, without contributing to survival of the host and damages it in some way, usually by causing disease

Parasite (Speleological)

Deriving food from a host, to which it is attached, and harming the host. In caves the Acarina (ticks & mites) are parasites on other invertebrates or vertebrates. (Note that some mites are free living in caves. cf Endophyte Epiphyte Holozoic Saprophytic
Fauna.
