Parity (Computer Hardware)

The quality of being either odd or even. The fact that all numbers have a parity is commonly used in data communications to ensure the validity of data. This is called parity checking.

Parity (Computer Technology)

Meaning that there is an equality. Usually for the purpose of safety, so that if one goes bad there is still the other.

Parity (Computer Virus)

The quality of an integer being odd or even. Also see parity bit, parity checking.

Parity (Dairy Production)

Number of calvings and thus the number of lactations of a cow.

Parity (Finance)

For convertibles, level at which a convertible security's market price equals the aggregate value of the underlying common stock; value/worth of the convertible bond considered only as an equity instrument (Conversion ratio times common price). See: Conversion value. For international parity, US$ price of a foreign stock's last sale in an overseas market (Local currency stock price times forex rate times ADR ratio). For listed parity, condition whereby no party has floor priority, and matching thus occurs. For options parity, dollar amount by which an option is in the money. See: Intrinsic value.

Parity (Financial)

Is the point where a convertible security equals the converted value of the underlying instrument. Is the point where a convertible security equals the converted value of the underlying instrument.

Parity (Human Reproduction)

The number of pregnancies of a particular woman in which the fetus has reachedviability.

Parity (International Economics)

1. Equality. Same as par. See also interest parity and purchasing power parity.
2. Official value, or par value.

Parity (Options)

Describing an in-the-money option trading for its intrinsic value; that is, an option trading at parity with the underlying stock. Also used as a point of reference - an option is sometimes said to be trading at a half-point over parity or at a quarter-point under parity. An option trading under parity is a discount option. Parity (Philanthropy)

Equality, as in amount, status, or value. Parity in philanthropy is the equal participation by spouses or other family members in the allocation of charitable dollars and in receiving the satisfaction and recognition of their contributions.

Parity (Political)

Equality. In political discourse, the term is employed in a variety of contexts: employment parity (when the makeup of a company's workforce is the same as the makeup of the population as a whole in its region); racial parity (when economic status of racial groups is equal); wage parity (the requirement that workers in certain occupations receive the same pay as workers in another, specified occupation).

Parity (RAID Drive Recovery)

A form of data redundancy used by RAID levels 2, 3, 4, and 5 to recreate the data of a failed drive in a disk array.

Parity (Securities)

An option trading for exactly its intrinsic value is said to be trading at parity.

Parity (Technology)

The quality of sameness or equivalence, in the case of computers usually referring to an error-checking procedure in which the number of 1s must always be the same--either even or odd--for each group of bits transmitted without error. If parity is checked on a per-character basis, the method is called vertical redundancy checking, or VRC; if checked on a block-by-block basis, the method is called longitudinal redundancy checking, or LRC. In typical modem-to-modem communications, parity is one of the parameters that must be agreed upon by sending and receiving parties before transmission can take place.
