Parity Bit (Computer Virus)

An extra bit (either 0 or 1) that is added to a group of bits to make it either even or odd, depending on whether even parity or odd parity is used. Parity bit is used to check for errors in data transfers between computers, usually over a modem or null modem cable.

Parity Bit (Technology)

An extra bit used in checking for errors in groups of data bits transferred within or between computer systems. With microcomputers, the term is frequently encountered in modem-to-modem communications, in which a parity bit is often used to check the accuracy with which each character is transmitted, and in RAM, where a parity bit is often used to check the accuracy with which each byte is stored.

Parity Bit (Telecommunications)

Most modems have the capability to send an extra bit for every byte sent, which is used to help sense errors. This is called the parity bit. It can be set to no parity, mark parity, space parity, odd parity or even parity. Most BBS's do not use a parity bit. [See also 8-N-1].
