Pitch (Architecture)

The rate at which a roof or other surface slopes.


Pitch (Aviation)

(1) Of the three axes in flight, this specifies the vertical action, the up-and-down movement. Compare ROLL and YAW. (2) The angle of a propeller or rotor blade in relation to its arc; also the distance advanced by a blade in one full rotation.

Pitch (Construction)

The incline slope of a roof or the ratio of the total rise to the total width of a house, i.e., a 6-foot rise and 24-foot width is a one-fourth pitch roof. Roof slope is expressed in the inches of rise, per foot of horizontal run.

Pitch (Entertainment Industry)

A short shot (typically from within 50 yards), usually played with a higher lofted club and made using a less than full swing, that is intended to flight the ball towards a target (usually the hole) with greater accuracy than a full iron shot.

the relative heigth or depth of a sound. Pitches are changed by adjusting the frequency of vibrations. Though modern pitch is standardized (with A=440), medieval pitch was not, and an entire piece could be moved higher or lower at will.

1) A fore and aft rocking motion of a boat.
2) How much a propeller is curved.
3) A material used to seal cracks in wooden planks.

Pitch (Public Speaking)

The position of a human voice on the musical scale.


Pitch (Real Time 3D)

If you nod your head "yes," this is pitch in action. One of the three rotational axes commonly used to describe the rotation of an object. The term comes from aviation. Most RT3D engines count from +90 to -90 degrees, starting out pointed straight up, turning downwards and ending pointed straight down. Straight forward is 0 degrees. See also roll, yaw.


Pitch (Remote Control Cars)

The measure on a pinion gear or spur gear of how many teeth fit per inch. On a 64-pitch gear, 64 teeth will fit within one inch; on a 48-pitch gear, 48 teeth will fit in one inch. HPI offers both 64-pitch and 48-pitch gears for electric cars. HPI Nitro cars use a unique pitch called "one module", abbreviated by "1M" in part descriptions. It is a metric pitch that is ideal for Nitro cars, which run on dirty parking lots. Nitro cars also suffer from engine vibrations, which can loosen.

Pitch (Rugby)

The rugby field is a maximum of 100 meters long, from try-line to try-line, and 70 meters wide. At each end of the field is an in-goal area, no more than 22 meters long. The field is marked by a half-way line, two 10-meter lines and two 22-meter lines, and by two dotted hash marks, each 5 meters from the sideline and extending from goal-line to goal-line. There is a set of goal posts on each try-line.
