Placebo (Addiction)

A pharmacologically inert substance that may elicit a significant reaction entirely because of the mental set of the patient or the physical setting in which the drug is taken.

Placebo (Anti-Aging)

an inert compound usually given to a portion of the subjects in a scientific experiment, in order to distinguish the psychological effects of the experiment from the physiological effects of the drug being tested.

Placebo (Breast Cancer)

An inactive substance used in controlled studies of drugs. The placebo is given to one group of patients and the drug being tested is given to a similar group of patients. The results obtained from these two groups are then evaluated and compared.

Placebo (Cancer)

An inactive substance or treatment that looks the same as, and is given the same way as, an active drug or treatment being tested. The effects of the active drug or treatment are compared to the effects of the placebo. The use of placebos in cancer treatment studies is very uncommon.

An inactive substance designed to resemble the drug being tested. It is used as a control to rule out any psychological effects testing may present. Most well-designed studies include a control group which is unwittingly taking a placebo.

Placebo (Food and Health)

Sometimes casually referred to as a "sugar pill," a placebo is a "fake" treatment which seems identical to the real treatment. Placebo treatments are used to eliminate bias that may arise from the expectation that a treatment should produce an effect.

Placebo (HIV and AIDs)

A "look-alike" dummy pill that does not contain drug; placebos are often used in clinical trials.

Placebo (Hormone Replacement Therapy)

A "sugar pill" or any dummy medication or treatment.

Placebo (Huntingtons Disease)

Any intentionally ineffective medical treatment, such as a sugar pill, used to replace medication. In clinical trials, placebos are given to control groups to compare the results of people who receive the placebo with the results of those who receive the experimental drug. The experimental treatment must produce better results than the placebo in order to be considered effective.

Placebo (Immunization)

A substance or treatment that has no effect on human beings.

Placebo (Lymphoma)

An inactive substance resembling a medication, given as a control in evaluating a medicine believed to be active. It is usually a tablet, capsule, injection, or infusion that contains a harrnless substance but appears to be the same as the medicine being tested. A placebo may be compared with a new drug or treatment when no one knows if the new approach will be effective.

Placebo (Multiple Sclerosis)

An inactive, non-drug compound that is designed to look just like the test drug. It is administered to control group subjects in double-blind clinical trials (in which neither the researchers nor the subjects know who is getting the drug and who is getting the placebo) as a means of assessing the benefits and liabilities of the test drug taken by experimental group subjects.
