Platelet (HIV and AIDs)

Also called a thrombocyte. A fragment of a larger type of blood cell that helps promote clotting. Normal values are 100,000 to 300,000; when counts drop below 10,000, bleeding becomes a serious concern.

Platelet (Legal, Mesothelioma)

A part of the blood that helps it "stick together" (clot) to promote healing after an injury. Chemotherapy can cause a drop in the platelet count--a condition called thrombocytopenia.

Platelet (Medical)

The smallest particle found in the blood, which plays a major role in forming blood clots

Platelet (Microbiology)

A noncellular disc-shaped structure containing protoplasm found in large numbers in blood and functioning in the blood clotting process.

Platelet (Nutrition)

Small, colorless disks in circulating blood, which aid in blood clotting. Platelets become more sticky (form clots easier) when we consume hard or hydrogenated fats, and less sticky (form clots less readily) when we consume Omega-3 fatty acids. Less stick platelets protect against heart attacks and strokes.

Platelet (Prostate Cancer)

A particle found in the bloodstream that binds at the site of a wound to begin the blood clotting process; platelets are formed in bone marrow.
