Point (Archival)

A unit of thickness of paper or board; one thousandth of an inch. For example, .060” equals sixty points. See also Mil.

Point (Backgammon)

1. One of the twenty-four narrow triangles, twelve on each side of a backgammon board, where the players' checkers sit. The points are numbered for each player 1 to 12 across the near side of the board and 13 to 24 in the other direction across the far side of the board. Either player's one-point is the other player's 24-point.
2. A made point.
3. To point on a blot.
4. A unit of scoring. Each game is worth 1, 2, or 3 points (for a single game, a gammon, or a backgammon (2)) multiplied by the value of the doubling cube.


Point (Basketball)

1) Basketball's basic scoring unit. A free throw is worth 1 point, a field goal 2 or 3 points, depending on whether it's shot from behind the three-point line. 2) The area in the frontcourt behind the free throw circle, where the point guard usually operates.


Point (Book Collecting)

A change in text, materials or format that is used to distinguish states.


Point (Canine)

The intense, stylized stance of the hunting dog, taken to indicate the presence and position of game.

Point (Casino)

In craps, dice term for the number rolled on the Come-Out Roll if a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 are rolled. The point has to be repeated before a seven rolls for the Pass Line bets to win.

Point (Frauds and Scams)

1) In stocks, a point equals $1. If ABC shares rise 1 1/4 points, each share has risen $1.25. 2) In bonds, a point equals $10 since a bond is quoted as a percentage of $1,000. A bond that rises 2 1/2 points gains 2.5% of 1,000, or $25. Thus, a bond that advances from 89 to 91 1/2 means a gain in dollar value from $890 to $915. 3) In market averages, the point is a unit of movement in an average. It is not equivalent to any dollar value. For example, if the Dow-Jones Industrial average rises from 4236 to 4258.5, it has risen 22.5 points.


Point (Geometry)

a measurement used in typography for type size, leading, and other space specifications in a page layout. There are 12 points in a pica, and approximately 70 points to an inch.

1. One of the several parts denoting the local positions on the escutcheon of any figure or charges. The principal points are:

E. Fesse (center)
2. A small part of the base of a shield variously marked off.

Point (Home Purchasing)

The amount paid to the lender to secure a lower interest rate. A point is equal to 1 percent of the loan amount.


Point (Hunting)

The sharp end of a hook(1) The extreme end of a CAPE, or the outer end of any land area protruding into the water, usually less prominent than a CAPE. (2) (SMP) A low profile SHORELINE PROMONTORY of more or less triangular shape, the top of which extends SEAWARD.

Point (Ice Hockey)

1) A goal or an assist credited to a player. 2) A unit used to determine league standings, in which a team is given 2 points for a win and 1 point for a tie or overtime loss. 3) An area near the boards and just inside the opposition's blue line, where a defenseman is normally stationed when his team has control of the puck in the attacking zone.

Point (Securities)

A price increment for a security or index. One point is $1 for stocks and $10 for bonds (1% of $1,000 face value). However, a one-point rise in the NYSE Composite Index does not represent $1.


Point (Table Tennis)

A single scoring unit. A player loses a point if: He fails to make a good service or a good return of the opponent's shot; the ball bounces twice consecutively in his court; his free hand touches the playing surface. Points are also lost because of a double hit, obstruction, or a volley. See also penalty point.

Point (Technology)

1. A unit of measure used in printing, equal to approximately 1/72 of an inch. Character height and the amount of space (leading) between lines of text are usually specified in points. 2. A single pixel on the screen, identified by its row and column numbers. 3. A location in a geometric form, represented by two or more numbers that constitute its coordinates.To move an arrow or other such indicator to a particular item or position on the screen by using direction keys or by maneuvering a pointing device such as a mouse.


Point (Tennis)

The basic scoring unit in tennis. The points are numbered "fifteen," "thirty," "forty," and "game." One player serves throughout a game and the first player to win four points wins the game, with the provision that the margin of victory must be at least two points.
