Purging (Blood and Marrow Transplant)

Process by which certain types of cells are removed from stem cells prior to infusion into the patient. In autologous transplantation, stem cells may be purged to remove lingering cancer cells. In allogeneic transplants, donor stem cells may be purged to remove T-lymphocytes that cause graft-versus-host disease

Purging (Lymphoma)

In bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell transplant, a process by which certain types of cells are removed prior to stem cell infusion into the patient. In autologous transplantation, marrow or blood may be purged to remove cancer cells that may be contaminating the collection. In allogeneic transplantation, the donor stem cells collected may be purged to remove cells that cause graft-versus-host disease.

Purging (Medical)

A forced cleansing or release. In terms of eating disorders this is usually done by vomiting or laxative abuse.

The act of replacing the atmosphere within a container by an inert substance in such a manner as to prevent the formation of explosive mixtures.

Purging (Weight Loss)

The use of vomiting, laxatives, excessive exercise, restrictive dieting, enemas, diuretics, or diet pills to compensate for food that has been eaten and that the person fears will produce weight gain.
