Release (Advertising)

The signed permission given by a person to use his or her photo, voice, name, or testimonial statement commercially.


Release (Agile Modeling)

The deployment of a working version of a system. Releases may be internal, available only to the development team, or external, available to some or all of the users for the system.


Release (Archery)

The act of letting go of the string to launch the arrow.

Release (Natural Disaster Response)

Any spilling, leaking, pumping, pouring, emitting, emptying, discharging, injecting, escaping, leaching, dumping, or disposing into the environment (including the abandonment or discharging of barrels, containers, and other closed receptacles containing any hazardous substance or pollutant or contaminant). (Section 101[22] CERCLA)


Release (Non-Profit Accountability)

A written agreement between two persons, by which one agrees not to sue the other, or to abandon an existing lawsuit, even if there is no basis for the lawsuit at the time the agreement has been made.


Release (Non-Profit Governance)

A written agreement between two persons, by which one agrees not to sue the other, or to abandon an existing lawsuit, even if there is no basis for the lawsuit at the time the agreement has been made.

Release (Real Estate)

An instrument releasing property from the lien of the mortgage judgment, etc. When a trust deed is used, the instrument is called a reconveyance. In some areas, a "discharge" is used instead of a release.


Release (Real Estate Appraisal)

The noting in a public office of the details of a legal document – such as a deed or mortgage – affecting the title to real estate. When such an instrument is properly recorded, it is considered to be a matter of public record. Legally, that means that all subsequent purchasers are deemed to have constrictive knowledge of that information.


Release (Rowing)

Release (Surf)


The effect that allows water flow to be accelerated as it passes along a surfboard's surfaces. Causes of release are usually available in the second (tail) half of the board, through tail rocker, outline curves and trailing fin edges, and through bottom features which open up opportunities for water to move, such as concaves and channels. Controlled release (along with its opposite, drag) is essential to successful surfboard design.

Release (Technology)

1. A particular version of a piece of software, most commonly associated with the most recent version (as in "the latest release"). Some companies use the term release as an integral part of the product name (as in Lotus 1-2-3 Release 2.2). 2. A version of a product that is available in general distribution. Compare beta2.1. To relinquish control of a block of memory, a device, or another system resource to the operating system. 2. To formally make a product available to the marketplace.
