Reparations (Ethics)

Benefits given to some group to make amends for damage done by previous injustice. For example, Japanese-Americans who were placed in internment camps during the World War II were recently given a monetary payment (of about $20,000) as reparations. Because children may be damaged by injustice done to their forebears, say because poverty undermines their health or limits their educational opportunities, arguments are made for reparations to descendants of those who were first injured, if the consequences of the injury are of the sort that pass from one generation to the next.

Reparations (International Economics)

Payment or other compensation provided by a government to a group of people or to another country to compensate for loss or damage that it has caused. Internationally, reparations have been paid after a war by the losers to the winners, most notably by Germany after World War I.
