Repeater

For Repeater we have terms and definitions in 13 topics. The topics are Cellular, Charles Dickens, Clocks, Computer Technology, Fiber Optics, Ham Radio, Pyrotechnics, SCSI, Suicide, Technology, Telco, Television and Watch.

Repeater (Cellular)

Device that receives a radio signal, amplifies it and retransmits it in a new direction. Used in wireless networks to extend the range of base station signals, expanding coverage more economically than building additional base stations. Repeaters typically are used for buildings, tunnels or difficult terrain.

Repeater (Charles Dickens)

A pocket watch which was capable of chiming on the hour or quarter hour, this made it easier to tell the time in the dark. Scrooge has one in A Christmas Carol which he checks when the first spirit is due.

Repeater (Clocks)

A clock with a mechanism that when activated repeats the striking of the last hour.

Repeater (Computer Technology)

A netwerk device that repeats a signal in order to amplify it so tranportation over a long distance has a good QoS.

Repeater (Fiber Optics)

A transceiver that converts optical signals to electronic and back out to optical.

Repeater (Ham Radio)

A repeater is a receiver/transmitter that listens for your transmission and re-transmits it. Repeaters usually enjoy the advantage of height and power to extend the range of your transmission. Repeaters listen on one frequency and transmit on another. The separation between these two frequencies is referred to as the Offset. See Repeater Operation

Repeater (Pyrotechnics)

Firework which fires multiple aerial effects into the sky

Repeater (SCSI)

A SCSI expander that increases the maximum allowable length of SCSI cabling by regenerating the signals. Refer to RegeneratoR™.

Repeater (Suicide)

Individual with HISTORY of SUICIDE ATTEMPTS.

Repeater (Technology)

A device used on communications circuits that decreases distortion by amplifying or regenerating a signal so that it can be transmitted onward in its original strength and form. On a network, a repeater connects two networks or two network segments at the physical layer of the ISO/OSI model and regenerates the signal.

Repeater (Telco)

A device intended to extend ISDN telephone service to site further from the central office than could normally be served. i.e.: beyond 18,000 feet. ISDN repeater technologies include "BRITE", "Virtual ISDN", "Lightspan", and "Totalreach". Some Telcos do not use repeaters. Compatibility between a given piece of CPE and a repeater is less certain than if that CPE were directly connected to the switch.

Repeater (Television)

An amplifier (together with receiving and transmitting antennas if the signal is transmitted through the air) not at the beginning of a long transmission path and used to boost the strength of signals transmitted along/over that path. Applications could include the distribution of video within a building.

Repeater (Watch)

Watch that strikes the hours by means of a mechanism operated by a push-piece or bolt. There are various types of repeaters. Quarter-repeater: sounding a low note for the hours and a "ding-dong" for each of the quarters; Five-minute repeater: striking the hours, quarters and five-minute periods after the quarter; Minute-repeater: striking the hours, quarters and minutes; Grande sonnerie (grand strike): striking the hours and quarters automatically and repeating when a push-piece is pressed down; Chiming repeater: in which the quarters are struck on three or four gongs of different pitch.
