Respondent (Arbitration)

The person against whom a claim is made.


Respondent (Canadian Law)

The party that "responds to" a claim filed in court against them by a plaintiff. The more common term is defendant. The word is also used to refer to the party who wins at the first court level but who must then respond to an appeal launched by the party that lost the case at the first court level (upon appeal, this latter person is called the appelant).


Respondent (Child Support)

The party answering a petition or motion.


Respondent (Computing and Social Science)

In survey research, the person responding to the survey questions.


Respondent (Data Management)

Person who responds to questions in a survey; a person interviewed. If an experiment was being done instead of a survey, the person would be called a Subject. In a group discussion, they'd be called a Participant.


Respondent (Divorce)

The defendant in a divorce.
