Robot (Computer Technology)

Besides being a mechanical device used to mimic human form, usually to accomplish some repetitive task, this refers to a computer program that scans web pages and links. Like a spider program, robots are used to scan web pages and index them. You can insert a file called robots.txt to the main directory of your website to tell the robots which directories not to index.

Robot (Etymology)

Robot comes from the Czech word "robot," which means "worker." In 1923, Karl Capek, a well-known, Czech, science-fiction writer at the time, wrote a futuristic thriller about a nightmarish scenario in which the machines have taken over (a la, the "Terminator") and implanted circuitry in humans to make them into mindless zombies willing to serve them as workers or "robots."

Robot (Interactive Marketing)

A program that runs automatically without human intervention. Typically, a robot is endowed with some artificial intelligence so that it can react to different situations it may encounter. Two common types of robots are agents and spiders. Commercial robots are programs that are used to fetch Web pages, but the user never has an opportunity to see the content of the requested documents. Personal robots provide the user with the opportunity to see the requested Web pages, usually in an offline mode. Also known as bots.

Robot (Internet)

An automatic text-indexing system that visits servers and indexes their contents. Helps create vast searchable directories.

Robot (Surgery)

An automatic device that performs functions normally ascribed to humans. More technically, a reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools, or specialized devices through various programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks. The word 'robot' was coined by the Czech playwright Karel Capek, from the Czech word for forced labor or serf.
