Rolfing is a technique developed by biophysicist Dr. Ida P. Rolf in the 1940s and 1950s. The underlying premise is that the layers of fascia around your muscles should move freely and enable your muscles to slide past each other. However, poor motion habits, stress-induced muscle tension and injuries can cause the fascia to stick, reducing mobility. Dr. Rolf developed a method of movement education and deep, sometimes uncomfortable massage that helps restore proper movement and breaks old patterns of muscle strain. Rolfing usually involves ten one-hour sessions spaced a week apart. Rolfing can be extremely helpful for sports injuries, neck and shoulder pain, poor posture, respiratory problems and repetitive strain injuries.
